A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain which bonds to the front surface of a tooth to improve it’s cosmetic appearance. Veneers can be used to mask discoloured, chipped, or misshapen teeth. They can also improve occlusion by restoring the tooth to its ideal shape and size.
Veneers require two appointments. At your first appointment the dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from the top surface of your tooth, and then take a mould which is used to make your custom veneer/s. You will wear temporary veneers while your permanent set are made up in porcelain. At your second appointment your permanent veneers are cemented to the teeth. Veneers offer a slight cosmetic advantage over dental bonding as they more closely replicate the natural tooth
Dental bonding is essentially fillings that are placed on healthy teeth for cosmetic purposes. They can be used to fix discoloured, misshapen or chipped teeth, and are a more affordable alternative to porcelain veneers. The composite resin we use is BPA free and matched to the colour of your teeth, ensuring a natural looking smile.
Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations. They are made outside of the mouth and then cemented into or onto the tooth. Their advantage is that they allow very strong materials to be used to restore teeth without significant tooth structure removal. The fabrication process, however is more complicated, time consuming than dental bonding. Our dentists at Canyon Lakes Dentistry at Katy will be able to discuss whether these are the right option for you.
